THE ODE FOR COLUMBUS DAY.

"COLUMBIA'S BANNER."

"God helping me,"-cried Columbus, "though fair or foul the breeze,"
I will sail and sail till I find the land beyond the western seas!"-
So an eagle might leave its eyrie, bent though the blue should bar,
To fold its wings on the loftiest peak of an undiscovered star !
And into the vast and void abyss he followed the setting sun;
Nor gulfs nor gales could fright his sails till the wondrous quest was done.
But O the weary vigils, the murmuring, torturing days,
Till the Pinta's gun, and the shout of "Land!" set the black night ablaze!
Till the shore lay fair as Paradise in morning's balm and gold,
And a world was won from the conquered deep, and the tale of the ages told!

Uplift the starry Banner! The best age is begun!
We are the heirs of the mariners whose voyage that morn was done.
Measureless lands Columbus gave, and rivers through zones that roll,
But his rarest, noblest bounty was a New World for the Soul!
For he sailed from the Past with its stifling walls, to the Future's open sky,
And the ghosts of gloom and fear were laid as the breath of heaven went by;
And the pedant's pride and the lordling's scorn were lost,in that vital air,
As fogs are lost when sun and wind sweep ocean blue and bare;
 And Freedom and larger Knowledge dawned clear,the sky to span,
The birthright, not of priest or king, but of every child of man!

Uplift the New World's Banner to greet the exultant sun!
Let its rosy gleams still follow his beams as swift to west they run,
Till the wide air rings with shout and hymn to welcome it shining high,
And our eagle from lone Katahdin to Shasta's snow can fly
In the light of its stars as fold on fold is flung to the autumn sky!
Uplift it, Youth and Maidens, with songs and loving cheers;
Through triumph's, raptures, it has waved, through agonies and tears.
Columbia looks from sea to sea and thrills with joy to know
Her myriad sons, as one, would leap to shield it from a foe!
And you who soon will be the State, and shape each great decree,
Oh,vow to live and die for it, if glorious death must be!
The brave of all the centuries gone this starry Flag have wrought;
In dungeons dim, on gory fields, its light and peace were bought;
And you who front the future-whose days our dreams fulfill-
On Liberty's immortal height, oh plant it firmer still!
For it floats for broadest learning; for the soul's supreme release;
For law disdaining license; for righteousness and peace;
For valor born of justice; and its amplest scope and plan
Makes a queen of every woman, a king of every man!
While forever, like Columbus, o'er Truth's unfathomed main
It pilots to the hidden isles, a grander realm to gain.

Ah! what a mighty trust is ours, the noblest ever sung,
To keep this Banner spotless its kindred stars among!
Our fleets may throng the oceans-our forts the headlands crown-
Our mines their treasures lavish for mint and mart and town-
Rich fields and flocks and busy looms bring plenty, far and wide-
And statelier temples deck the land than Rome's or Athens pride-
And science dare the mysteries of earth and wave and sky-
Till none with us in splendor and strength and skill can vie;
Yet, should we reckon Liberty and Manhood less than these,
And slight the right of the humblest between our circling seas,-
Should we be false to our sacred past, our fathers God forgetting,
This Banner would lose its lustre, our sun be nigh his setting!
But the dawn will sooner forget the east, the tides their ebb and flow,
Than you forget our radiant Flag, and its matchless gifts forego!
Nay!you will keep it high-advanced with ever-brightening sway-
The Banner whose light betokens the Lord's diviner day-
Leading the nations gloriously in Freedom's holy way!
No cloud on the field of azure-no stain on the rosy bars-
God bless you, Youths and Maidens, as you guard the Stripes and Stars!

The Discovery of America

The Discovery of America

By BESSIE F. DODGE.

  OFFICIAL HYMN AND OFFICIAL POEM FOR THE OFFICIAL CELEBRATION OF THE COLUMBUS DAY ON THE OCTOBER TWELFTH,  IN THE SCHOOLS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. THIS DAY IS OFFICIALLY CALLED THE DISCOVERY DAY AND AS WELL THIS IS THE NATIONAL HOLIDAY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND IS CALLED THE FLAG DAY. ON THE COLUMBUS DAY THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IS RAISED.

A PLAY - For thirteen children each reciting one verse - one child at a time.

THIS PLAY IS COMMEMORATION OF THE REAL HISTORICAL EVENTS WHICH HAPPENED ON THE SHIPS OF THE CAPTAIN CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS IN 1492.

October twelfth is Discovery Day;
And I'll tell you one thing more-
To discover is to find out
What was not known before.

Hundreds of years ago,
In fourteen-ninety-two,
Christopher Columbus
Sailed over the ocean blue.

Before that time, white people
Lived on the other side,
And between them and America
Lay the Atlantic, deep and wide.

Columbus was an Italian,
His home was near the sea;
In school he studied geography,
That he a sailor might be.

All but this Columbus
Thought the world was small and_flat,
And if they traveled very far,
Would come to the edge-think of that.

He tried to prove to learned men
That the earth is like a ball,
But only a very few
Would listen to him at all.

At last, Queen Isabella,
Said she believed him any way,
And helped to fit out three small ships
To sail westward without delay.

After sailing for many weeks,
The men were filled with alarm,
And planned if Columbus did not turn back,
To do him cruel harm.

Columbus understood how they felt,
And said if in three days more
They did not see signs of land,
They would return to their homeward shore.

But before the time was over,
Land was in full view,
Indians were here and there,
In wigwam and canoe.

Columbus in a scarlet robe,
With Spain's banner in his hand,
With the sailors went on shore
And thanked God for the beautiful land.

This country was named America
But some people think-do you?-
That it should have been Columbia
For Columbus brave and true.

This fact then do not forget,
Whatever else you do;
 Columbus discovered America
In 1492.

By:

ALICE COOK FULLER, Deadwood, S.D.

The children should have small twigs, bearing Autumn leaves pinned to the shoulders, and small branches crossed on the breast. One larger branch should be held in the right hand, with its point touching the left shoulder.

SONG TUNE "Hold the Fort"

Hark ! The trees are all ashiver( motion 1)
Strange sounds do they hear.
See the crimson leaves aquiver-
North Wind's drawing near.

Chorus
"Come", he calls, "your playtime's over;
Seek your beds so warm,
Gently fall these seeds to cover-
Guarding them from harm."

Autumn haze is sweeping o'er us,
Leaves are red and gold,
 North Wind fairies sing the chorus
 To us as of old.

Chorus
"Come", they say,- "Your playtime", etc..

See(motion2), the Autumn leaves are falling (motion 3)
In the crisp, fresh air!
Have they not heard North Wind calling
All the leaves so fair?

Chorus

"Come", he called, etc.

MOTIONS

1. Shake the longer branches lightly.
2. Raise larger branches to position above heads.
3. Bring slowly down to position.

Gently swaying branches to and fro, march entirely across the front of the room, down the outside aisles, up the center aisle, and separating at the front, march to right and left, down the outside aisles, and across the back then from there to their seats.

The text of the Hymn " Hold The Fort"

That which ye have hold fast till I come REV ii 25

1. Ho my comrades See the signal Waving in the sky!
Reinforcements now appearing, Victory is nigh!
"Hold the fort the fort for I am coming," Jesus signals still,
Wave the answer back to Heaven, "By Thy grace we will."

2 See the mighty host advancing, Satan leading on:
Mighty men around us falling, Courage almost gone!
"Hold the fort the fort for I am coming," Jesus signals still,
Wave the answer back to Heaven, "By Thy grace we will."

3.3 See the glorious banner waving!
Hear the trumpet blow!
In our Leader's name we 'll triumph
Over every foe!

4.4 Fierce and long the battle rages,
But our help is near:
Onward comes our great Commander,
Cheer, my comrades, cheer!

OFFICIAL SONG OF COLUMBUS DAY

 Verses

Read responsively the first thirty one verses of Psalm CVII

SONG OF COLUMBUS DAY

Contributed by

The Youth's Companion

AIR: Lyons

 Columbia my, land! all hail the glad day
When first to thy strand Hope pointed the way:
Hail him who thro' darkness first followed the Flame
That led where the Mayflower of Liberty came.

Dear Country, the star of the valiant and free!
Thy exiles afar are dreaming of thee.
No fields of the Earth so enchantingly shine,
No air breathes such incense, such music as thine.

Humanity's home! thy sheltering breast
 Gives welcome and room to strangers oppress'd.
Pale children of Hunger and Hatred and Wrong
Find life in thy freedom and joy in thy song.

Thy fairest estate the lowly may hold,
Thy poor may grow great, thy feeble grow bold,
 For worth is the watchword to noble degree,
And manhood is mighty where manhood is free.

O Union of States, and union of souls!
Thy promise awaits, thy future unfolds,
And earth from her twilight is hailing the sun,
That rises where people and rulers are one.

An Indian Lullaby

 An Indian Lullaby

(A HYMN)

Rock-a-by, rock-a-by, little brown baby.
Safe on the green branch so high,
 Shut your bright black eyes and go
sleep, baby,
While the wood-wing sings, "Hush-
a -by-by."

"Hush-a-by-hush" 'tis the voice of
forest,
"Hush-a-by-hush "the leaves seem
to say,
"Hush-a-by-hush" sing the wild birds
in chorus,
Up in the tree tops so far, far away.

Rock-a-by, rock-a-by, swinging so
gently,
See, from the dark woods so cool and
so deep,
The little gray squirrel, the timid
brown rabbit
 Are coming to see if papoose is
asleep.

Mother will watch by her little brown
baby,
Swinging aloft on the green branches
so high,
No harm can come to the little brown
baby
Hush-a-by, rock-a-by, hush-a-by-by.

Autumn Leaves

 Autumn Leaves

(HYMN)

By Eula G Lincoln

The leaves have turned from green gold
And red and orange and brown;
Whenever gentle breezes blow
They come a-dancing down.

I watch them floating in the brook
And make believe they're ships,
With fairy crews and precious loads,
On long and dangerous trips.

I like to wander in the woods,
For there it smells so sweet,
And where the leaves are lying thick,
To walk with lagging feet.

I like the little leaves of spring.
They re green and fresh and bright,
But autumn leaves in colors gay
Are such a pretty sight.

Columbus Acrostic

 Columbus Acrostic

(HYMN)

By Effie Crawford

 C is for Christopher, who in days
yore
Was born in Genoa, on Italy's shore.

is for Ocean, on which he did sail;
No matter how stormy he weathered
the gale.

L is for Land that he longed so to find,
He left all his kindred and home ties
behind.

U for Unfriendly, which his mates
proved to be;
They threatened to throw him adrift in
the sea.

M is for Money, to aid in his task;
The Queenm Isabella, gave all that he
asked.

B is for Boats. Their number was
small.
But patient their leader, and brave
through it all.

U for Untraveled, the path that he
chose.
But from it a nation, much cherished,
arose

S for San Salvador, country he gave;
Yet unloved and lonely, he went to his
grave.

(ALL )
So Columbus, you see, the name
we have here:
And these are the reasons we
him so dear.

Christopher Columbus was a native of Genoa a,nd died at Valladolid in the year 1506 being about seventy years old. But this great man was unjustly deprived of the honor, of giving his name to this continent by Americus Vespucius, a native of Florence, who claimed the honor of being the first discoverer of the main land.

Columbus Day

 Columbus Day Exercise

(HYMN)

By Alice E Allen

(May be recited by four children each giving one stanza or by three all giving last.)

A little ship,
An ocean wide,
 A troubled crew,
So terrified.

A captain who,
From dusk to dawn,
Gave this command-
"Sail on! Sail on!"

A bird, a branch,
With berries red,
A light-oh joy,
Land, land ahead!

The flag of Spain
Proudly unfurled-
Columbus finds
Our own New World!

(Our own School sings first and last of "America")
