 MOTHER'S DAY 

OBSERVED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA: MOTHER'S DAY -SECOND SUNDAY IN MAY

An all nations and simultaneous observance for the well being and honor of the home. 

How observed 

Through some distinct act of kindness: visit, letter, gift, or tribute: show remembrance of the Mother and Father, to whom grateful affection is due. Mother's Day is equally Father's Day. and is designed to deepen and perpetuate all family ties. The day is so-called,be cause in most countries no national celebration is in special honor of the home and noble motherhood.

 Its slogan 

In honor of "The Best Mother Who Ever Lived" the mother of your heart. 

The badge- is a white carnation 

Time of observance 

is the second Sunday in May by churches of all creeds, etc. Schools celebrate on Friday, and business and other organizations on Saturday, preceding second Sunday in May.

 On May 10 1913 a resolution passed the United States House of Representatives and the Senate, commending Mother's Day for observance by the House and Senate, the President of the United States and his Cabinet, and other heads of Government departments. In 1913 the Legislature of Nebraska made Mother's Day a State flag day in honor of the patriotism of Nebraska's true homes and mothers.

 In 1914 Hon J. Thomas Heflin at the request of the founder of Mother's Day, Miss Anna Jarvis, introduced in the House of Representatives a joint resolution, which was agreed to whereby the President of the United States should designate, through an annual proclamation, the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day, and "request the display of the American flag on all Government buildings homes and other suitable places."

 President Woodrow Wilson issued the first National Mother's Day proclamation on Saturday, 9 1914, asking, that Sunday May 10, (second Sunday in May 1914) be observed as Mother's Day, accordance with the joint resolution of the House of Representatives. This official recognition of Congress of the Mother's Day Movement was the culmination of years of work to permanently establish a day sons and daughters of all lands to honor their homes. The United States is the first nation of the to give such a national, patriotic honor and tribute to its homes as "the fountain head of the State," to its sons and daughters for their work for the home, moral uplift, and religion." for the good of Government and humanity.

For several years it has been the custom of the Governor of almost every State in the Union to issue a Mother's Day proclamation, asking citizens, churches, homes, and organizations to enter into the spirit of the day. Former Governor Colquitt of Texas made it a practice to pardon a number of prisoners on Mother's Day.

MOTHER'S DAY INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION 

This association was organized to promote and protect the celebration of Mother's Day and its work in the United States and foreign countries. Any son or daughter of any country is eligible to membership in the Mother's Day Association.

 In the United States the association has among its honorary national officers President Wilson and ex- Presidents Roosevelt and Taft, and Governors or other prominent citizens of the various States Headquarters. 2031 N 12th Street Philadelphia Pa.

 I think of a lost garden I knew 
in my boyhood, 
Filled with the scent of the rose. 

And sometimes, w h e n  the 

clamor of life seems end-

less,

 And my soul is bowed with 

its weight and pain 

I think of an old, still apple 

tree in blossom 

At the end of a hawthorn lane.

Oh, do not smile at such simple 

memories! 

They keep us young, they 

keep the man-heart right. 

And some time we will all go 

back contented 

To a Garden, and a Tree, in a place of light.

Charles Hanson Towne has been most widely known and admired as a poet, but since the appearance of his novel "The Chain," which was pubLished during the summer, his fame has spread rapidly through another field. Portland people who were fortunate enough to meet Mr Towne personally. during his visit to Portland. or ,who heard him speak at any of the public functions. held in honor of the
"Putnam Party". know that he is a clever punster. Many of his remarks such as "Poets are born, not paid;" "The wages of gin is breath;" "Out, where the vest begins;" etc. are still gleefully quoted.

 Mr Towne WAS a contributor to a number of the best known national magazines and has recently been made fiction editor of Metropolitan.

WHEN We lovingly think of the one who who has
done
 The most for mankind in her 
place;
Who has lifted the world from dark-
ness to light, 
And worked for the good of the 
race.  
Of one who has silently plodded along, 
Retiringm unselfish, and kind;-

 It is MOTHER who comes to our mind. 

While men are contending in Com-
merce and Trade, 
The wealth of this world to gain;- 
Securing the glory and homage of

 She suffers in silence and pain.

She bows to her duty without a com-

And MOTHERS the whole human race.
